PHL cricket team posts early victories in Samoa

SHOWING resolve in their first overseas game, the Philippine Cricket Association team won their first two games in the 2011 Pepsi International Cricket Council East Asia-Pacific Division 2 Trophy tilt on Monday in Samoa. The Philippine squad routed the strong Indonesian team via seven wickets and later on beat Cook island with five wickets.
The innings of Henry Ahuja and Rana Sameer, earned the Philippines some early advantage. Later on the game, two injudicious shots by Ahuja and Sameer sliced the Philippines’ lead to 35 for 2, but Vimal Kumar and Tariq Ali came in and worked the ball around the ground for a partnership of 45.
Ahuja and Rakesh Thakur limited the Indonesians to a score of 105 for 6 off their 20 overs.
Ninety minutes later after lunch break; the Philippines relied on opening bowlers Gohar Ali and Inderjit Benipal to beat Cook Islands in the qualifying event for the 2012 Cricket World Cup. The Philippine team, with a 2-0 win-loss log, would play against South Korea and Samoa on Wednesday. On Thursday, the team would take on Tonga.
The Philippines needs to win two more games to enter the tournament’s finals.
