In the very first assignment of the Philippines in the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, Gilas Pilipinas came in the game undermanned but on fire as the national team played like a well-oiled machine defeating the defending champion China.

Big man, JunMar Fajardo's service wasn't needed against China as the team started the game hot and was shooting really well. The Philippines scored a total of 53 points in the first half against 39 points of China.

In the 3rd quarter, China suddenly caught fire and their three point shooting suddenly connected. They had a huge 3rd quarter scoring 31 points that continued on the mid part of the fourth quarter. China is on a run and was able to capture the lead late in the fourth quarter.

The Philippines needed some scoring and the defense of China inside was getting tighter by the minute. This was when fearless Terrence Romeo took over the game with crucial shots after another. Romeo ended up scoring with a game high of 26 points.  Castro contributed 13 points,  Standhardinger with 15 and Matthew Wright with 12.

Japeth Aguilar and Gabe Norwood manned the defensive end with a combined 8 of the total 9 blocks of Gilas.
