With his now-handicapped friend watching at ringside, Filipino bantanweight prospect Michael Domingo exacted a short but sweet revenge as he poleaxed Colombian Luis Melendez in the second round Sunday night at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu, Philippines. Domingo, 30, stalked Melendez as soon as the bell opened the highly emotional bout with the Filipino throwing few but punishing hooks to the body. “That was what Z told me. Melendez can take a punch to the face but he can easily get hurt with body shots,” said Melendez moments after the fight.
In the second round Domingo continued his attack until he saw an opening and unleashed a perfectly-timed left hook to the body that floored Melendez for good. Official time was 1:39.
“I’m happy for this win but it made the win very special in seeing my friend savor this victory,” said Domingo.
Melendez was the same Colombian who scored a knockdown against Gorres in their 12-round face-off last year in Las Vegas.
Gorres survived the fall and eventually won the fight but the single punch that floored the Filipino proved to be almost fatal as the Filipino fell into coma and had to undergo several medical procedures in Las Vegas.
The former world title challenger is now on his way to an encouraging recovery and was at ringside to cheer for Domingo.
