Pacquiao bound for US in June to pick awards

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing champ and newly elected Sarangani Congressman Manny Pacquiao will fly to the US in June to receive his “Fighter of the Decade” award from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).

Aside from the Fighter of the Decade honor, Pacquiao will also receive his 3rd “Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year” award from the BWAA.
The BWAA chose Pacquiao for the honors just months after picking up his 7th world title by stopping Puerto Rican champ Miguel Cotto in November last year.
Pacquiao said he is honored to have been picked to receive the honors, especially the fighter of the decade plum.
“Napakahalaga niyan. Bihira lang ang boksingerong makakuha n’yang ‘Fighter of the Decade’… Salamat sa Panginoon at sa mga taong sumusuporta,” he told ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo.
According to boxing website The Sweet Science (thesweetscience.com), Pacquiao has placed himself at the level of boxing greats Muhhamad Ali and Evander Holyfield for getting the most number of BWAA "Fighter of the Year" awards in the history of the organization.
Also getting the honor for Pacquiao’s recent boxing victories is his trainer Freddie Roach.
Roach won a record setting 4th "Trainer of the Year" award.
