Calderon retains WBO title

Ivan Calderon retained his WBO light-flyweight title in New York with a unanimous points victory over Mexico's Jesus Iribe.

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican recovered from a second round knockdown to dominate the fight, winning on the scorecards by verdicts of 118-109 twice and 116-111.

Calderon, who is now unbeaten in 35 fights, remains under the radar because he fights at the second lowest weight-class and has little punching power, recording just six stoppage wins.

However, once more he showed off his quality technical skills against big underdog Iribe, who nevertheless dropped the champion with a right hand early on.

"I got hit hard and went down in the second round, but I knew good movement would beat him," said Calderon, who was making the sixth defence of his title.

His reign has not been an easy one, with his last three fights all stopped early following accidental headbutts - Calderon winning two on points with one ruled a draw.
