Toroman closes door on Giles

June 3, 2010, 10:26am
Smart-Gilas Serbian coach Rajko Toroman has slammed the door on the possible return of American CJ Giles, saying he’s not the right man for the team.
“No way,” Toroman said when asked to comment on the possibility of getting back the former Los Angeles Lakers forward. “He’s very athletic but he’ll never give you the results that we want.”
Giles, who tried out for Smart-Gilas last year, said Tuesday that he’s keeping his options open regarding playing for the Philippines again.
Toroman said he’s not interested in getting back his services.
He said he was not at all impressed with the performance of the 6-foot-11 Giles in the 21st FIBA-Asia Champions Cup last week where he played for Al-Riyadi-Lebanon.

In his game against Smart-Gilas, Giles made just eight points although the Lebanese squad won, 74-63.
The 24-year-old Giles was also a non-factor in the semifinals when Al Riyadi lost to eventual champion Mahram-Iran (64-71), and even when Lebanon won over ASU of Jordan (82-78) to finish third overall.
“We saw him in the quarterfinals against Smart-Gilas, in the semis against Iran and then in the game versus Jordan. He makes stupid fouls. That’s what he is, he won’t change,” Toroman said.
Toroman said that what the Nationals need is to find somebody like Jamaal Sampson, another former import, a 7-footer who was impressive in several exhibition games, averaging almost 20 points and 20 rebounds.
