MANILA, Philippines – Two-time world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. said he will be ready to defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) belt against Mexican Hernan “Tyson” Marquez, who will be gunning for his first world title for the first time.
“I know that Marquez is coming off a loss and that makes him very dangerous as he will try to get back on the winning track,” Donaire said during a press conference in Puerto Rico as quoted by FightNews.com.
“He is a strong guy and I will have to fight him smart. I expect him to come at me and I will be ready for him,” added the WBA interim super flyweight champion.
Donaire has 23 wins (with 15 knockouts) and 1 loss while Marquez has 27 wins (with 20 KOs) and 1 loss.
Marquez, a knockout artist, vowed to win Donaire’s world title.
“This opportunity came to me from nowhere and I took it, because I know I can win this fight. Donaire is a great boxer, but I believe that not only can I compete with him but defeat him as I will do everything in my power to take the belt home with me on Saturday night,” the Mexican said.
The Donaire vs Marquez bout, a supporting main event in “The Challenge,” will be held on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey.
