MIAMI — After 14 years, Pat Riley finally has Juwan Howard.
Howard, 37, joined the Miami Heat on Tuesday, signing a deal that won't raise the ire of NBA officials — unlike his first agreement with Riley. In July 1996, Howard signed a $100 million, seven-year contract with Miami that was ultimately voided by the league because the Heat had gone over the salary cap.
After all this time, Riley thinks Howard will fit his team again. And for a veteran's minimum salary, the NBA won't complain either.
"We feel that Juwan's ability to play both the four and five spot will be complimentary to what we have put together," said Riley, the Heat president. "He also gives us incredible professionalism and is a perfect fit behind Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem."
Howard becomes the sixth newcomer under contract by the Heat for 2010-11.
Notes
• Amare Stoudemire will not play for the United States in next month's world championships because of problems insuring his contract, a damaging blow to the Americans on the day training camp opened.
The New York Knicks' new forward was expected to be one of the Americans' top players in Istanbul, Turkey, but the team learned of the change of plans.
• Magic Johnson said he never would have joined with Larry Bird to win a championship the way LeBron James is teaming with Dwyane Wade.
Johnson, who won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, joins fellow hall of famer Michael Jordan in saying they would focus more on beating their rivals than joining them.
"We didn't think about it cause that's not what we were about," said Johnson, whose Michigan State squad beat Bird's Indiana State team in the 1979 NCAA championship. "From college, I was trying to figure out how to beat Larry Bird."
• Brad Miller has signed with Houston, reuniting the 7-foot center with coach Rick Adelman.
Miller signed a three-year, $15 million contract to back up Yao Ming, who is expected to be ready for next season after sitting out a year to recover from foot surgery.
• Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum has postponed his knee surgery to July 28.
• Portland has reached an agreement with restricted free agent Wesley Matthews, a deal that was solidified when Utah did not match Portland's offer for the shooting guard.
