Pacquiao begins sparring sessions

WORLD’S pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao starts the heavy phase of his training with a series of hard sparring sessions at Shape Up gym in Baguio City. Trainer Freddie Roach told boxing site’s philboxing.com that Pacquiao’s punches would be tested against sparring partners Shawn Porter and David Rodela beginning today.


The sparring sessions are geared to gauge the Filipino champion’s preparedness to take on Sugar Shane Mosley for the World Boxing Organization welterweight crown on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

“I’m expecting to see Manny’s strong fast punches,” said Roach, noting that the best strategy against Mosley (46-6-1 win-loss-draw with 39 knockouts) is to outbox him.

Roach added that Pacquiao (52-3-2 win-loss-draw with 38 knockouts) must move all over the ring and deliver quick, strong punches to the 39-year-old Mosley, who was also presently undergoing tough training in Big Bear California.

Mosley made a firm promise not to become the next victim of the Filipino ring icon.

“There’s nothing new on Pacquio’s speed,” Mosley told fighthype.com. “I’ve been in the ring with people who throw a lot punches. So it’s not like something I haven’t seen before. He’ll [Pacquiao] be in trouble when I hit him.”

Mosley stressed that he isn’t like Margarito and the rest of the other victims of Pacquiao, “I’m pretty sure I’m going to be able to land some good shots on him and get him in trouble,” he added.

The card, at the ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida, is led by two featherweights attempting to climb the rankings Angelo Leo (23-1, 11 KOs), who trains out of Las Vegas, Nevada, made weight at 125.8 lbs. His opponent, Eduardo Baez (23-5-2, 9 KOs), came in slightly lighter at 125.4 lbs. They will contest a 10-round main event. Leo is a former WBO super-bantamweight champion.
