(PBA) Painters out to stop Gilas Pilipinas run

Rain or Shine takes its turn against Smart-Gilas today, with the Elasto Painters trying to succeed where four other teams have so far failed in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The game, set at the Astrodome, will be a big challenge for the Painters who are bidding to gain a share of the lead while trying to prove the pros are indeed better than the amateurs who are merely using the tourney to gear up for international competitions.

"It’s really very difficult," admitted coach Yeng Guiao. "It’s going to be a big challenge."
Newly-naturalized Filipino Marcus Douthit, all 6-foot-11 of him, is one big reason why the Nationals are on a roll, something they may not experience against taller and heftier foes in the Jones Cup in July and the FIBA-Asia tilt, the qualifying tournament for next year’s London Olympics, in September.
It’s not only Douthit who is causing problems for Gilas’ pro foes, notwithstanding the latter’s reinforcements who are all below the 6-4 height ceiling. There is also the Nationals’ overall style of play that coach Rajko Toroman has drilled into them the last couple of years.
"The reason why (PBA) teams have problems (against Gilas) is because they have a different style, which is constant passing and screening, and if you’re not used to that you’re going to struggle," noted Guiao.
Still, there is Douthit, who has been averaging 21.5 points, 19.75 rebounds, 3.0 assists and as many blocked shots per game. It is the Syracuse-born center who draws the defense and creates ample space for Gilas’ outside shooters like Marcio Lassiter, JV Casio, Dylan Ababou, Chris Lutz and Chris Tiu.
"You have to pick your poison," Guiao pointed out. "It’s either defend Douthit–which is really just putting additional pressure on him since maliit na team kami and he has no physical match-up anywhere here–or defend their outside shots."
Guiao and his staff have done their homework and are now left hoping the strategies they’ve drawn up will be enough. "We’ve scouted them enough at pinaghandaan namin sila," he stated. "We prepared hard."
So did Toroman and his charges, although the Serbian, as is his wont, maintained his team has its own problems, one of them how to deal with prolific Elasto Painters import Hassan Adams.
"Rain or Shine is a good team. They have one of the best imports and I expect a very difficult game," said Toroman. "We have some problems with Greg (Slaughter) who is sick, Mark Baracael, who is still not ready enough, and (Aldrech) Ramos with his school (Far Eastern U). But we will try everything to win the game."
Meanwhile, Talk N Text clash tomorrow in a Phoenix Fuel-sponsored road game in Cagayan de Oro.
