Drian Francisco off for Bangkok, title defense

Reigning WBA super flyweight interim king Drian “Golden Fists” Francisco and his team left yesterday for Bangkok to prepare for his Labor Day showdown with Thai Tepparith Singwancha in Phetchaburi.



With Francisco (20-0-1, 16 knockouts) were promoter Elmer Anuran, who also heads Saved by the Bell Promotion; trainer Benny de la Peña and conditioning expert Juvie Encontro.

Francisco expressed confidence that he will beat Tepparith, who is ranked fourth by the WBA and holder of the Pan Asia Boxing Association super flyweight crown.

Anuran said the bout could be a huge stepping stone for Francisco in his bid to challenge Mexican Hugo Cazares (34-6-2, 24 KOs) for the WBA title this year.

Known for his punching power, Tepparith (15-2, 10 KOs) hopes to avenge the humiliating defeat of his friend Duangpeth Kokietgym at the hands of Francisco last November in Nong Khai province.

American Rafael Ramos will be the third man in the ring.

The Bangkok Post noted that Francisco, of Touch Gloves Boxing Gym, is one of the Philippines’ fastest boxing stars, thanks to his fighting style and powerful punches.

Francisco has knocked out all his six previous Thai foes since 2006.

“I’ll bring the fight to Tepparith,” Francisco vowed.
