Star Hotshots are extremely elated about their win against Ginebra not only because they took Game 1 of the PBA Manila Clasico Semi-final series but they did finally win against rival Ginebra.
Star Hotshots while joyous on their recent winning streak at 7 is also concerned because they have not won a single game against Ginebra in their last four meetings. The Manila Clasico series is a big deal for both teams as it is considered by many as a key matchup and it is one of the heavily marketed games that has the most spectators watching.
"Its a best of 7 series, I am sure we are going to get one game against them" - said Marc Barroca, Point guard of Star Hotshots.
Marc Barroca was indeed correct as they drew first blood against the crowd favorite Ginebra. Ginebra who was ahead in the first half at 38-37 never led again as Star Hotshots tightened up their defense and was able to make a number of critical shots that spelled doom for the Gin Kings.
"It was defense, defense is the key, personally that is my job, its just a bonus if I get some points" - March Pingris, Power forward of Star Hotshots.
Pingris who was one of the key players was preaching defense, aside from getting 9 bonus points, he was also dominating the defensive side getting a number of block shots late in the game. Pingris ended with 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 block shots.
Coach Chito Victolero was euphoric after the game and of the results. He wasn't even aware that they are on their 7th winning streak. He said he is only focused with one game at a time.
Star and Ginebra will face each other once again in the game 2 of their semi-final series that will be held February 11, 5 pm at the Mall of Asia Arena.
