Expect More Changes: Marcial Forms Committtee to Review League Rules

Commissioner Willie Marcial continues to bring changes into the league (Photo by the PBA Media Bureau)

Committee will be headed by three multi-titled coaches

"Change is Coming"

That is the promise of President Rodrigo Duterte during the 2016 National Elections. And apparently, PBA fans can expect that more changes will come their way starting the mid-season PBA Commissioner's Cup.

The PBA, through the good Commissioner Willie Marcial, has formed a committee which is said to be led by Norman Black, Tim Cone, and Yeng Guiao- three of the PBA's longest-tenured and most successful coaches in terms of the number of championships that they've won. The main objectives of the said committee are the following:

  • Review all league rules and policies
  • Determine the direction that the PBA will take and if deemed needed, recommend changes

According to the commissioner, the said competition committee will also establish what style of basketball should the league employ, whether it's the "No Harm No Foul" rule, the super strict officiating which was questioned by many, or a combination of both. In short, the committee will now write the "bible" of the PBA which the teams can refer to once completed.

Depending on the decision of the committee which will also include Ryan Gregorio and Alex Compton, the committee will work hand-in-hand with the league officials to make the necessary adjustments that will make the rules and policies consistent with the new style.

Conclusion: This is good for the PBA and for the fans

Considering the mere fact that Commissioner Willie Marcial sought for the help of Tim Cone, Norman Black and, Yeng Guiao who combined for 38 championships as coaches, it's a good sign that Willie Marcial is more than willing to work with those who have been in the league for so long to determine how can the PBA get back the excitement of the fans. Why? If you're watching the league during the past few seasons, these were the coaches who raised questions about the inconsistency of the officiating and clearly, Commissioner Marcial made the right call.  Who knows? We might even see a faster-paced PBA come the Commissioner's Cup.
