Why the Zamboanga Valientes Are Heading to Dubai With Everything to Prove!

The MLV-Zamboanga Valientes are heading into the 2026 Dubai International Basketball Invitationals with more than just travel bags — they’re carrying something to prove. The elite invitational tournament gets underway on January 24, and the Valientes are set to test themselves against some of the toughest clubs across the Middle East and North Africa.

Despite a limited preparation window, former Barangay Ginebra big man Greg Slaughter says he likes what this Valientes roster brings to the floor. He pointed to the blend of size, experience, and talented guards as a competitive advantage that could help offset their lack of time together.

“Our team composition is solid. We’re big, we have some of the best guards out there, and we can match up physically with anyone,” Slaughter said.

Indeed, the Valientes’ frontline is imposing. Anchored by Slaughter at 7-foot, 6-11 Malick Diouf, 6-8 Anthony Bennett, and the return of 7-5 import Sam Deguara, they’ll be one of the most physically intimidating teams in the field.

Slaughter also stressed the deeper motivations driving the squad — many of the players are fighting to reclaim or establish professional opportunities after losing roster spots in various leagues, including the PBA. That hunger, he believes, will fuel their effort on the international stage.

“Most of the guys out there are still fighting for slots in different leagues,” Slaughter said. “Expect them to give it their all.”

The Valientes’ roster also features former PBA players Mike Tolomia, Nick Demusis, and Dennis Santos, alongside emerging prospects like Forthsky Padrigao and high-flying Bryan Manuel.

Owned by Junnie Navarro and prepared for overseas competition, the team will depart for Dubai ahead of the tournament to adjust to the time zone and environment.

In Group B, the Valientes will face Al Ahli Tripoli (Libya), Club Africain (Tunisia), Alkarama Sport Club (Syria), and Sports Club Beirut (Lebanon) in a single round-robin format.

Navarro emphasized that while there’s no pressure on the team to deliver a specific result, his goal is to take things step-by-step and showcase the resilience Filipino players are known for.

Beyond basketball, Navarro sees the Dubai trip as an opportunity to elevate Filipino — especially Zamboangueno — talent on the international stage, drawing inspiration from fellow athletes who have brought honor to the country.
