KAZ/PHI - Smart Gilas win hearts, Astana the game

DOHA (21st FIBA Asia Champions Cup): It surely was a heartbreak time for the second game in succession for the large number of fans assembled at the Al Gharaffa Stadium on Monday night, with Smart Gilas of Philippines bowing down 71-77 in Overtime to Astana Tigers of Kazakhstan in a Group A game.
Smart Gilas had lost to Al Rayyan in their opening game on Sunday. Astana Tigers are now, 2-1 in their win-loss.
John Ramos just about managed to beat the buzzer with his sizzling three-pointer to tie a game of swaying pendulum at 61-61 and forced the issue into Overtime.

Dmitriy Gavrilov took charge of the proceedings in the extended time scoring eight points, out of his game-high 26 as Astana surged ahead.
Smart Gilas were not to be left behind even at this stage, and closed the score to 69-74 at one point, but ran short of time.
“I am happy to have scraped through,” Astana Tigers coach Vitaly Strebkov heaved a sigh of relief.
“We struggled with our shooting, especially in free-throws,” he said.
Astana converted only 43% of the free-throws before the issue went into Overtime, but managed to hold their own in the extended five minutes converting eight of the 12 attempts, for a 75% record.
“What can you say about such a game,” said Smart Gilas coach Toroman Rajko.
“You ought to take these games in your stride and move on.”
Scores
Astana Tigers, KAZ 77 (Dmitriy Gavrilov 26, Anton Ponomarev 17) bt Smart Gilas, PHI 71 (Chris Tiu 17, Andy Baroca 14, Marnel Baracel 13). Quarterwise scores: 20-14, 36-30, 51-44, 61-61.
