Everybody waiting for Express to make move
WITH Air21 having the top three picks in the PBA Annual Draft on Aug. 29 at the Market! Market Place in Taguig, the rest of the teams are left with no choice but to await the decision of the Express before making their own.
Practically all the other squads will make their picks after the Express, who became the first team to own the top three picks overall since the draft was instituted in 1985, have made their choices. They also own the No. 6 pick.
"Depends on who is still there," said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio, whose team owns the No. 4 pick.
The same sentiment was expressed by Rain or Shine chief tactician Carlos Garcia, who is planning to use his team’s No. 5 rights for a center, a point guard or a wingman.
"Sayang naman kasi kung kanino lang gagamitin ang pili kaya dapat worthy ng No. 5," said Garcia, who initially looking at former Ateneo slotman Claiford Arao but has shifted his sights elsewhere.
Air21 coach Yeng Guiao has said they plan to use their top two choices on 6-foot-7 center Rabeh Al-Hussaini and do-it-all forward Nonoy Baclao, and their No. 3 pick on either a quicker big man or a shooter.
There are plenty of two and three guards among the 63 draft applicants, among them RJ Jazul, Mark Canlas, Rey Guevarra, Elmer Espiritu, Jimbo Aquino, Fil-Canadian Sean Michael Anthony, Fil-Am Mark Jeffries and John Marlon Wilson.
The Vancouver-born Anthony, a 6-foot-4 forward-guard, impressed no less than B-Meg Derby Ace team manager Alvin Patrimonio while the 6-foot-6 Canlas, a nephew of former PBA Rookie of the Year Gil Cortez, has displayed consistency as a frontliner.
What the teams are really watching out for, however, are the big men who may still be available after the top picks have been made.
Ginebra, picking seventh and eighth, is in dire need of a backup to Rico Villanueva and Eric Menk while Alaska is on the lookout for a replacement for guard Jeffrey Cariaso, who retired after the Aces’ Fiesta Conference title romp.
Talk N Text, Barako Bull, San Miguel Beer and Coca-Cola only get to pick in the second round.
