WBC/WBO BANTAMWEIGHT world champion Fernando Montiel (43-2-2, 33 KOs) won in devastating fashion over former WBA interim super flyweight titlist Rafael Concepcion (14-5-2, 8 KOs) on Sunday morning (Philippine time) in Chiapas, Mexico. Montiel dropped Concepcion twice in round two, then put him down for good in round three at the 1:07 mark.
Both boxers are well known in Cebu. Last July 26, 2008, Concepcion scored a come-from-behind 10th round stoppage win over AJ Banal to win the WBA interim crown at the Cebu Coliseum.
Montiel beat Z Gorres by a controversial split decision last February 24, 2007 at the Cebu City Sports Complex Grounds.
Montiel, who hails from Sinaloa,Mexico, is now in line for a possible superfight against Nonito Donaire,Jr. of the Philippines, who plans to move up to the 118 lb. division.
Top Rank Boss Bob Arum also mentioned the possibility of a Donaire vs Montiel showdown for November after the Filipino Flash beat Hernan Marquez of Mexico last week.
Montiel beat another Filipino, Ciso Morales by first round TKO last February in Las Vegas.
