Mike Miller pulls no punches with MMA stars

Here’s how Heat forward Mike Miller spent part of his summer: He trained with mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters.

“I figured these guys are the most conditioned athletes in the world, I think, so I went out and did it for two weeks in Phoenix/Scottsdale with those guys,” he said. “And it was amazing.”

A full workout? “No,” Miller said quickly. “No punches.”



Miller spoke Thursday night while attending Bellator 24, the debut event of the Bellator Fighting Championship Season 3 at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla.

Heat forward and good friend Udonis Haslem was supposed to join Miller at the event but Haslem’s plans changed.

Miller, as you might know, is a big MMA fan. He sponsors some of the best fighters in the world, guys such as Ryan “Darth” Bader, a top-ranked light heavyweight and an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) competitor; C.B. Dollaway, another UFC fighter who, such as Bader, is on the card for UFC 119 on Sept. 25; Aaron Simpson, a UFC middleweight; and Robbie Lawler, a top-ranked middleweight.

“I love, love it,” Miller said of MMA.

Miller also seemed to love the two weeks of MMA conditioning.

“It’s the most amazing thing in the world,” Miller said. “Bader is getting ready for his fight in September and I was out there conditioning with him. Simpson is getting ready. C.B. is getting ready, so I got in the middle of it and it wasn’t that easy, I’ll tell you that much.”

One thing Miller didn’t tell is whether he thinks he should start for the Heat. Some have maintained Miami would be better served with a starting lineup of the Big Three- Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh Miller and center Joel Anthony.

Miller, a former Sixth Man of the Year, simply laughed when asked about starting.

“I’m going to see what happens,” he said. “Obviously with what we’ve got there’s a lot of excitement, there’s a lot of buildup. We’ll see what happens. I’ve (started) before, I’ve come off the bench before.

“To win a championship we’re going to have to have a bench, so if me and Udonis have to come off the bench and do some things, then we’ll do that.
