Bautista answers doubters, knocks out Mexican Barrera in three rounds

After facing a couple of setbacks in his career, Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista is finally back. He ended his grudge rematch with Mexican Alejandro Barrera with an impressive third round knockout in a brawl last night at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.

“He’s back,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu after the exhilarating fight. “He worked hard in the gym and he showed that he still has it.”
Unlike their first encounter, Barrera surely came to knock out Bautista, like he predicted, as he immediately brawled with Bautista in the beginning of the bout.
Barrera landed a couple of good shots to the 24-year-old Boholano’s head. But Bautista never faltered and fought back with a few good shots of his own that had the jam-packed crowd standing on their feet.
Both fighters continued to gamely trade leathers and Barrera’s nose started to bleed in the second round.
After another exciting round, both boxers were still standing toe-to-toe in the third.
However, Bautista got the better of the exchanges, landing a solid left straight to the side of the 31-year-old Mexican’s body that sent him to the canvas on one knee. Barrera beat referee Bruce McTavish’s count but he was immediately met with Bautista’s onslaught that sent him once again on one knee. Barrera still felt the pain of Bautista’s powerful punch to the body and was counted out by the referee in the 2:56 mark of the third.
“Barrera was good. He was better this time but I was really confident of winning this,” said Bautista. “I expected him to attack because he trained with Daniel Ponce De Leon.”
Bautista improved to 30-2 with 23 knockouts, while Barrera fell to 21-5 with 14 knockouts.
Jason Pagara (25-1, 14 KOs) scored an impressive first round knockout over Indonesian Billy Sumba (18-2-1, 4 KOs). Pagara, 19, knocked Sumba out cold in the 2:53 mark with a devastating counter left hook.
Ex-World Boxing Council flyweight champion Edrin Dapudong (21-3, 12 KOs) stopped tough Indonesian Sofyan Effendi (10-11-2, 8 KOs) in the 17 second mark of the seventh round.
Pan Asian Boxing Association bantamweight titlist Roli Gasca beat Joash Apericio by unanimous decision. The scores were, 77-74, 78-74, and, 78-73, for Gasca.
Ring clown Jun Intor put up a show for the fight fans, but he lost by majority decision to Albert Villacampa.
“Pinoy Pride 3: The Rematch” will be shown today at 10 a.m. on ABS-CBN. It will be replayed at 9:30 p.m. on Studio 23 and 10:30 p.m. on ABS-CBN.
