Marquez offered not just a third, but a fourth meeting with Pacquiao

Not only a third fight, but even a fourth meeting between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez looms in the horizon.

Under the deal Marquez signed with Top Rank Promotions, a rematch will be automatically made in case the Mexican gets the better end of his supposed Nov. 12 bout with boxing’s top pound-for-pound king in Las Vegas.

The 37-year-old native of Mexico City is set to receive a staggering $5-million in his latest clash with Pacquiao, an amount that would double ($10-million) if and when he beats his long-time nemesis from the Philippines.

And as always, the Mexican in him has Marquez truly confident that he can take the best Pacquiao will offer in the ring.

People know that a third fight with Pacquiao is my dream," said Marquez, who was at ringside when the eight-time world champion from the Philippines dominated Sugar Shane Mosley in 12 lopsided rounds to retain his welterweight title last week at the MGM Grand.

“It’s the fight that I’ve been waiting for."

Wait Marquez did since losing a controversial split decision against Pacquiao three years ago in a super-featherweight championship bout not a few believed the Mexican won.

That fight came four years after the two great warriors drew their featherweight title encounter despite Pacquiao dropping Marquez thrice in a blazing opening round.

For the third installment of what has been an intriguing rivalry between two fighters with contrasting style to be consummated, Golden Boy Promotions has to wave off its rights to match the Top Rank offer.

Although Marquez has yet to renew his contract with the promotional outfit owned by Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy still holds the right to match any proposal tendered to Marquez by other promotional company.

Golden Boy has until next week to decide whether to let Marquez go or not.

But the Mexican is obviously very happy with what was offered to him on the table by Bob Arum, the venerable promoter behind Top Rank.

“There were definitely things that I liked (in the offer)," admitted Marquez. This time, there are very good conditions for the fight, like the weight and salary."

Other than the rematch clause and doubling Marquez’s pay day, the deal also included a catch-weight of 144 pounds, an additional $5 for ever pay-per-view sales exceeding 700,000 buys, and a $1-million bonus for every pound Pacquiao will be over the agreed catch-weight.

Of course, fights involving Pacquiao had earned well in pay-per-view buys, including 1.2-million sales during his November showdown with Antonio Margarito.

Arum already hinted this week that the pay-per-view figures for the Pacquiao-Molsey fight is likely to surpass the PPV earnings of the Margarito fight.

The catch-weight was agreed upon since the Filipino southpaw has been campaigning as a welterweight (147) in three of his last four bouts, even going to as high as the super-welterweight (154) division when he took on Margarito last year for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) crown.

The Marquez camp inserted the clause regarding the fine on weight issue after being deceived by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their fight two years ago. Marquez and Floyd Jr. also fought at a catch-weight of 144 pounds with a corresponding fine in case the brash-talking American failed to meet the agreed weight.

Floyd did exceed the catch-weight, coming in at 146 pounds and paying the fine reportedly amounting to $500,000. But he refused to be re-weighed on the day of the fight, resulting in speculations that he might have weighed 150 or more when he inflicted Marquez a severe beating for 12 full rounds.

“What happened when he (Marquez) fought Floyd Mayweather Jr was that Mayweather had a big weight advantage," recalled Nacho Beristain, the highly-respected trainer of Marquez.

“From what we’ve seen of Manny Pacquiao, he has never get above 150 pounds and that’s what matter. On the day of the fight, both of them will (dehydrate) evenly," added Beristain. - RCJ, GMA News
