The game was closely contested as both teams wanted to start with a win in the 42nd season of the PBA Philippine Cup.  Star Hotshots new coach Chito Victolero wanted to make a statement and pulled off a surprising move by letting the newest member of the team play. Newly acquired Paul Lee with the longest playing time of 33 minutes. Also unexpected was Rookie Jalalon playing longer minutes than old timers Justin Melton and Peter Jun Simon.
