On January 30, 2025, Filipino basketball sensation Kai Sotto shared a significant update with his fans via Instagram. He posted a photo captioned "Operation Done TYL," indicating that he had successfully undergone surgery for his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. This announcement came around 7 PM Manila time, providing clarity to supporters who had been eagerly awaiting news about his surgical schedule.

Sotto sustained the ACL tear on January 5, 2025, during a game with the Koshigaya Alphas in Japan's B.League. The injury necessitated reconstructive surgery, which was completed earlier today. According to Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone, Sotto is expected to be sidelined for approximately nine months to a year as he undergoes rehabilitation and recovery.

Recovery timelines for ACL injuries can vary among athletes. Studies have shown that professional basketball players often return to play within 11.6 months post-surgery, with a high success rate of 98%.

However, individual recovery can differ based on factors such as the severity of the injury, the athlete's overall health, and adherence to rehabilitation protocols.

Given the anticipated recovery period, Sotto will be unable to participate in the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup scheduled for August 2025. Coach Cone acknowledged the significant impact of Sotto's absence on the team and emphasized the importance of other players stepping up during this period.

Fans and the basketball community are rallying behind Sotto, sending well-wishes for a smooth and swift recovery. His dedication and resilience have been evident throughout his career, and many are optimistic that he will return to the court stronger than ever.
