NBA Legend Gary Payton Visits Manila, Speaks Up on Basketball’s Future
Manila, Philippines — The Glove is in the house! ๐งค
Nine-time NBA All-Star and Hall of Famer Gary Payton made his fourth visit to the Philippines, joining an exclusive Daily Fantasy panel alongside host Tin Gamboa, former PBA star Jared Dillinger, and fantasy hoops expert Papi Roi.
And just like his defense back in the day — Payton didn’t hold back.
When asked about the rumored 4-point line being considered by leagues (including the NBA), Payton made it clear:
“You should only be able to shoot a three — that’s it. You start adding 4-point shots, you’re gonna mess up the game. It’s gonna get sloppy. I don’t want sloppy basketball.”
The 2006 NBA Champion believes hoop fans should appreciate fundamentals over gimmicks, keeping the essence of the 5-on-5 game alive.
MJ, Trash Talk, and Lessons from the Legends
Payton also shared a funny-but-humbling rookie story facing Michael Jordan in his very first NBA game.
“Jordan told BJ Armstrong, ‘I’m guarding the rookie.’ Next thing you know, I’m in foul trouble, he’s got 35, and he walks up like, ‘Welcome to the NBA, young fella.’”
Classic MJ moment right there.
He then reflected on how the trash-talk era has faded:
“Trash talking isn’t in basketball anymore. Players yell, but not at anyone — because they’ll get called for taunting. The game’s changed.”
Social Media and the Modern Athlete
According to Payton, social media has made players more cautious:
“Kids are watching too closely. Everything gets replayed and posted online — nobody wants to be that viral moment.”
Advice for the Next Generation
To the young hoopers dreaming big, Payton shared timeless wisdom:
“Never stop learning — in life, business, or basketball. There’s always someone better. Keep working hard and stay humble.”
