LEBRON WAS ALMOST A KNICK… THEN THIS HAPPENED

LeBron James has revealed that he once envisioned finishing his legendary NBA career in New York, wearing the orange and blue and playing his final games at Madison Square Garden.

But then the Knicks did something that completely changed his plans.

Speaking during Philadelphia 76ers Media Day on Monday, James admitted that joining the Knicks had been a real possibility before New York ended its 53-year championship drought by defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals.

“I had visions of playing in [Madison Square] Garden and finishing my career in the Garden,” James said.

He described Madison Square Garden as one of the best places he has ever played and called it the No. 1 arena in the world for a basketball player.

But once the Knicks became NBA champions, LeBron said he simply couldn't go through with it.

“After they beat San Antonio, I was like, ‘Hey, I can’t.’ I couldn’t do it.”

Why?

James knew exactly how the move would be perceived.

After winning a championship, the Knicks no longer needed a superstar to help end their drought. LeBron felt that joining the defending champions could have brought back the criticism and backlash associated with his 2010 decision to join Miami.

“Y’all wouldn’t have let me lay that down, at all,” James said, referring to the media and public reaction.

Instead, the 41-year-old superstar chose Philadelphia, joining a 76ers roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.

And here's the crazy part:

LeBron will still be living in New York.

He confirmed that he plans to split his time between New York and Philadelphia despite playing for the Sixers. Philadelphia will also visit Madison Square Garden on opening night, giving fans a glimpse of the version of LeBron that almost happened.

So imagine this:

LeBron James.
Madison Square Garden.
Knicks jersey.
The final chapter of his career in New York.

It was apparently a real possibility.

Then the Knicks won the championship—and LeBron walked away from the dream.

One championship changed the entire LeBron James free-agency story.
