Elsewhere, Naoya Inoue’s agent is working on the Bam Rodriguez deal, and Keyshawn Davis has secured freedom before securing his next opponent.
1. Smith owns the belt, while Danseco’s card tells another story
Two judges gave Smith seven rounds; Danseco gave him four. That is the clearest explanation of the disagreement behind Sheffield’s split decision: Kieran McCann and Jon Llona Fernandez returned 115 to 113 for Smith, while Danseco scored 116 to 112 for Puello. A split verdict alone does not establish bad judging, but these cards describe meaningfully different readings of the same contest.
Smith subsequently praised Puello’s awkwardness and experience, talkSPORT reported. The challenger’s threat, outlined in our earlier look at Puello’s Sheffield opportunity, survived the opening bell.
Powcast’s view: any serious scoring debate should identify disputed rounds and effective punches, rather than treat either the hometown result or the dissenting card as proof by itself.
2. Inoue’s deadline now has an agent working toward a deal
John Lewis, Inoue’s agent, told The Ring’s Mike Coppinger that he is working with Matchroom to finalize a March fight with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez in Tokyo. His concise explanation matters: “Both fighters want it.” This adds a negotiating update to the earlier warning about Inoue’s preferred timetable, rather than another demand from one camp.
The proposed prize is Inoue’s undisputed championship at 122 pounds, requiring Rodriguez to move up from bantamweight. Neither a specific March date nor a completed contract was announced in Coppinger’s report. Willingness now has a named negotiator behind it, but fans still need the agreement that turns a shared ambition into a booking.
3. Davis wins contractual freedom, with his next fight still unresolved
Bob Arum says Keyshawn Davis requested a release with one fight remaining on his Top Rank contract, and the company granted it. Speaking to Joe Profit on the O.S.O.S Podcast, in comments reported by The Ring and Bad Left Hook, Arum explained that Top Rank preferred releasing an unhappy fighter to prolonged litigation.
The useful distinction is between control and opportunity. Davis can now choose his promotional direction, but that does not guarantee a better opponent or payday. Richardson Hitchins has publicly attributed their failed discussions to Davis’s financial demands; that remains Hitchins’s account. The release is confirmed by Arum, while Davis’s next promotional home and bout remain unsettled.
4. Hughes gives Visioli something sparring arguments cannot
Giorgio Visioli’s reputation has partly developed through a public sparring dispute with Curmel Moton, The Ring’s Declan Taylor noted. Maxi Hughes supplied a more useful examination under actual fight conditions: an eighth round that left Visioli bleeding around his left eye and facing a sudden change in momentum.
Visioli recovered behind his jab and earned a narrow majority decision. The revealing detail was his response after trouble, rather than the preservation of an unbeaten record alone. Hughes prevented a comfortable showcase, while Visioli demonstrated enough composure to finish the assignment. That gives his team specific weaknesses to address before choosing the next step.
