TNT reached the next round with a decisive second half, while Golden State made a major commitment to Brandin Podziemski. Manila Clasico now takes center stage as Ginebra tries to build real momentum.
1. TNT Overwhelms San Miguel and Secures a Quarterfinal Place
TNT erased a five point halftime deficit and beat San Miguel 116 to 98 at Ynares Center in Antipolo, sweeping its two Governors’ Cup meetings with the Beermen and securing a quarterfinal berth. The Tropang 5G broke a 73 all tie with triples from RR Pogoy and Rey Nambatac, then won the third quarter 33 to 18. Nick Hornsby delivered 23 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Pogoy scored 21 and Calvin Oftana added 18. TNT finished Group A play at 6 and 4 after winning twice in four days. San Miguel fell to 7 and 3 but had already qualified, with CJ Perez scoring 21 and George King adding 20.
2. Warriors Commit 110 Million Dollars to Brandin Podziemski
Golden State has agreed to a five year, 110 million dollar rookie scale extension with Brandin Podziemski, according to agent Bill Duffy, keeping the 23 year old guard away from restricted free agency next summer. The fully guaranteed agreement starts in the 2027 to 2028 season at 18.9 million dollars and includes a mutual option for 2031 to 2032. Podziemski averaged 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists while playing all 82 games last season, and his 153 made three pointers ranked second on the Warriors behind Stephen Curry. Following the encouraging form discussed in our recent Warriors coverage, the deal makes the club’s belief in him unmistakable and settles an important roster commitment before the October 19 deadline.
3. Ginebra Brings Fresh Momentum Into Manila Clasico
Barangay Ginebra meets Magnolia tonight at Smart Araneta Coliseum after snapping a two game slide, but Manila Clasico still carries serious pressure in Group B. The Gin Kings improved to 3 and 4 by beating Rain or Shine 129 to 111 on Friday, powered by RJ Abarrientos’ 34 points and three successful four point shots, plus 30 points from new import Jordan Murphy. Magnolia enters at 5 and 3, so another Ginebra loss would make the closing stretch much less forgiving. Tim Cone must now see whether the chemistry that produced 73 first half points can survive a tougher emotional setting and a second game in three nights. Our background on Murphy’s arrival and Ginebra’s urgent restart explains how quickly the import change had to work.
4. FEU Takes the UAAP Lead With a Statement Win
Far Eastern University claimed sole first place in UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball by routing Ateneo 93 to 70. Mo Konateh controlled the paint with a career best 29 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals as the Tamaraws won their fourth straight game and improved to 4 and 1. FEU turned a four point first quarter deficit into a seven point halftime lead, then broke the contest open in the third. Ateneo played without interim coach Louie Alas, who served a one game suspension after accumulating three infractions, and fell to 3 and 3 despite Jared Bahay’s 17 points and seven assists. FEU’s interior control changed the early shape of the standings.
5. Jumamoy Saves NU From a UST Comeback in Overtime
Reinhard Jumamoy banked in a deep three pointer with 0.5 seconds left to lift National University over University of Santo Tomas 87 to 85 in overtime, stopping a comeback that erased a 15 point NU advantage. UST’s Landyn Jumawan scored eight straight points late in overtime to put the Tigers ahead 85 to 84 before Jumamoy answered under tight defense. Mo Diassana then blocked Amiel Acido’s final attempt. Jumamoy finished with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Jumawan led UST with 22 points. NU moved to 4 and 2 with its second straight victory, while UST slipped to 2 and 3 after coming painfully close to a dramatic escape.
