Alex Eala’s bid for Asian Games singles gold concluded in a three-set battle at the Higashiyama Tennis Center. After capturing the opening set with clinical baseline precision, the 21-year-old Filipina star was edged by China’s Wang Xiyu, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6.
Eala won five consecutive games in the first set, but the 85th-ranked Wang capitalized on a 5-1 surge in the second set to level the match. In the deciding third frame, Wang broke Eala’s serve twice to close out the victory after two hours and 14 minutes of play. "I fought the best I could fight, but she played better in the end," Eala said after securing her second consecutive Asian Games bronze medal. Eala will take a brief recovery window before returning to the WTA Tour for the Wuhan Open on October 12.
