Contract extension talks between Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks have hit an unexpected financial standstill. While both sides express mutual interest in a long-term partnership, their numbers are miles apart as training camp begins.
Towns is officially eligible to ink a four-year designated veteran maximum extension worth up to $276 million. However, Knicks management is fiercely holding out for a deal closer to four years and $200 million to dodge severe second-apron luxury tax penalties. The franchise wants to reduce Towns’ projected 2027–28 player option ($61 million) to maintain breathing room around Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby. Towns was instrumental during New York's 2026 title push, but if no middle ground is reached before Opening Night, Towns could test unrestricted free agency in 2027. Head coach Tom Thibodeau plans to proceed with normal offensive installations while front-office brass pauses talks until mid-season.
