BEIRUT, Lebanon (3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup): Philippines returned from the half-time break recharged, outscored their rivals 18-5 in the first five minutes of the third quarter and grew stronger thereafter to post a resurgent 81-67 win over Syria in a needle Group B game on Sunday.
Both Philippines and Syria had lost their opening encounters on Saturday.
Chris Tiu was the leader of the Filipino resurgence.
The pocket sized Manila powerhouse produced a perfect shooting record – converting once each from the paint and the foul-line and twice from the perimeter – scoring nine of his 14 points for the game in the third quarter.
As a result, Philippines who were 35-40 behind going into the changing rooms were 63-53 ahead over the next ten minutes.
Mark Barocca shared the scoring honors for Philippines with Asi Taulava scoring 16 points each – the latter completing a double-double to go with his game-high 19 rebounds.
It was one-way traffic thereafter as Syria seemed taken in by that Filipino charge.
Micheal Madanly came up with another game-high 27 points, but 18 of them came in the first half.
Mohammed Dyar kept the Syrian flag flying after the half-time scoring 15 of his game’s 20 points.
