Pinoy cager in NBA possible

MIAMI Heat coach Erik Spoelstra expressed belief that a full-blooded Filipino cager will play in the National Basketball Association in the near future.
The 39-year-old Fil-American tactician said that with the heart and passion that Filipino players have for the game, there will come a day that a player from the Philippines will wear an NBA uniform.
“Our players here are obviously very passionate about the game. There is no question that there are a lot of talented players here. It’s just a matter of time when a Filipino finally sets foot in the NBA,’’ said Spoelstra.
Despite the Filipinos’ natural lack of size and height, Spoelstra said that determination and hard work are the keys that would make a player go all the way to the NBA.
’Filipinos are very hard working and that would be the main weapon. It offsets the limitations of the players in terms of height. Sooner, scouts might notice some of the players here eventually. With the help of the PBA in showcasing homegrown players, it would be easier in the future to send a player to the NBA.’’
Spoelstra is the first Filipino-American head coach of any North American professional sports team. He is also the first Asian coach in the NBA thus far. He is currently on his second tour of duty in the country. He is presently conducting basketball clinics and promoting a healthy lifestyle through the NBA Fit program.
He also conducted the same activities last year in his first visit.
After his global tour, Spoelstra is expected to start Miami’s training camp led by mainstay superstar Dwyane Wade, along with new superstar acquisitions LeBron James and Chris Bosh for the coming 2010-2011 NBA Season, which will kick off in October.
