Three-time NBA All-Star Glen Rice is looking forward to playing alongside the PBA's "Triggerman", Allan Caidic, as the two will team up for the Red Team against the White Team in the NBA Asia Challenge 2010 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Rice, the 1997 NBA All-Star Game MVP, is among the four ex-NBA superstars that will see action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The second edition of the NBA Asia Challenge will feature mixed teams comprised of NBA Legends, NBA D-League players, and PBA All-Stars and Legends.
"I've been waiting for the Triggerman. I've heard a lot of him and can't wait to play with him," said Rice during Tuesday’s press conference for the second staging of NBA Asia Challenge at the Fiesta San Miguel room of the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel in Makati City.
In last year's NBA Asia Challenge, where the PBA Legends played against the Kareem Abdul Jabbar-coached NBA Legends, Caidic drained five straight three-pointers in the first quarter of their match.
"It would be great to match skills with him and I've heard he is a great shooter so expect a lot of fireworks," added Rice, who made a name for his three-point shooting accuracy where he finished eighth in the NBA’s three-point field goals made in his 16-year professional career.
Rice is an NBA and NCAA champion winning titles with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000 and leading the University of Michigan Wolverines to the 1989 Men’s Division I crown against Seton Hall.
As a player, Rice has won an NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship and an NBA Championship. Rice has won both the NBA All-Star Game MVP and the NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player awards.
Joining Rice and Caidic for the Red Team are 1996 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and 2006 NBA champion Gary "The Glove" Payton, D-League’s Darnell Lazare and Chris McCray, PBA Legends Atoy Co and Vergel Meneses, and PBA players Asi Taulava of the Powerade Tigers (formerly Coca-Cola), LA Tenorio of Alaska and Arwind Santos of San Miguel.
The Red Team will be coached by Tim Cone of newly-crowned Fiesta Cup champion Alaska.
Rice and Caidic will be up against PBA Legend Ronnie Magsanoc and Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel, who will both be playing with the White Team together 2002 NBA champion and six-time NBA All-Star Mitch Richmond and six-time NBA All-Star and 1994 Rookie of the Year Chris Webber, who is also a former Wolverine.
Magsanoc and Hontiveros are also famous for shooting their long-range bombs.
Other members of the Siot Tanquincen-coached White Team are D-League veterans Mark Tyndale and Richie Frahm, PBA Legends Alvin Patrimonio and Benjie Paras, and current PBA players Ronald Tubid of Barangay Ginebra and Rico Maierhofer of B-Meg Derby Ace.
Frahm is also a former PBA import who played for Talk 'N Text when the team was then coached by American Bill Bayno.
The Miami Heat Dancers and Mascot Burnie will also add flavor to the star-studded showdown. - Jon Perez, GMANews.TV
