MANILA, Philippines — Fil-Am boxing champion Ana ‘The Hurricane’ Julaton stakes Philippine pride Saturday when she defends her World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight belt against American Franchesca Alcanter.
TV5 and Aksyon TV41 will be airing the 10-round title bout live from the Craneway Pavilion Point Richmond in California beginning at 12 noon.
Boxing fans in Metro Cebu and Metro Davao can catch the fight featuring the country’s first and only lady boxing champion at Channel 29.
The 30-year-old Julaton is making the first defense of her 122-lbs title after winning it in July last year with a 10-round split decision of Marian Elena Villalobos.
Sporting a 7-2-1 record, Julaton, whose parents are from Pozzorubio, Pangasinan, sparred close to 100 rounds to prepare for what she termed as the “hardest training camp I ever had.”
She may need all that preparation against a veteran rival who is 37-years-old, strong and muscular and whose 18-9-1 record includes nine knockouts.
And she also comes from a family of boxers.
Her grandfather Joey “The Bombarding Mexican” Alcanter fought as a lightweight from 1933 to 1948, while her uncle and Joey’s brothers, Pete and Baby Louis Alcanter, also boxed in the 1930s.
She fought for a world title four times in the past, but lost on all four attempts, the last of which came in 2009 with a 10-round decision at the hands of reigning WBC featherweight champion Ina Menzer in Bremen, Germany.
