Gilas shoots for playoff berth

After absorbing its first defeat, the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas tries to rebound and clinch a playoff berth against unpredictable Powerade in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup today at the Araneta Coliseum.

The national team (5-1) clashes with the Tigers (2-5) in the 4 p.m. game before the 6:30 p.m. tiff pitting B-Meg Derby Ace against San Miguel Beer.




The Beermen are coming off a 117-93 defeat at the hands of Philippine Cup champion Talk ’N Text last Friday that dropped them deep in the cellar in the team standings with a 1-6 win-loss card.

Even if they win against B-Meg and Rain or Shine, the Beermen are not assured of advancing in the playoffs.

"It’s not in our hands anymore. We’ll just try to win," said SMB team manager Hector Calma, who added that they will stick with import David Young for their last two games instead of looking for a replacement.

B-Meg Derby Ace, on the other hand, has decided to tap a new import in former University of Southern Mississippi player Courtney Beasley, who recently played in Peru averaging 27 points and eight rebounds. He replaced Shamari Spears.

The Llamados are coming off a convincing 98-90 overtime win against the Nationals last Wednesday despite parading a depleted roster with six players on the injured list, including reigning MVP James Yap (strained right calf), Rafi Reavis (right hand), Jonas Villanueva (sprained right ankle), Don Allado (foot), Jondan Salvador (strained shoulder) and Rico Maierhofer (ACL).

While Maierhofer, Reavis and Allado are out for the conference, the status of Yap, Villanueva and Salvador are day-to-day, which means they could play depending on their health condition, particularly in this crucial game.

"We need to show the same character we had against Gilas to be able to overcome the challenge of playing short-handed. We also hope that the new import can provide us energy for us to win," B-Meg mentor George Gallent said.
