Milan Melindo scores 1st Round KO in Pinoy Pride

Filipino flyweight Milan “Metodico” Melindo stopped his Mexican foe in just 1 round in the main event of Pinoy Pride 4 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel on Saturday.

Melindo’s accurate punching sent Mexican Rosendo Vega down to the canvass twice in their fight scheduled for 10 rounds, according to according to Philboxing.com.

The Filipino connected with a right uppercut to Vega’s chin, staggering the aggressive Mexican to his first knockdown.

The Mexican was able to get up, but a short right from Melindo knocked him out for good.

Melindo remained unbeaten in 24 fights.

Jakosalem stops Claggett
In the undercard, Davaoeño Romeo Jakosalem fought back from 2 knockdowns to stop his Canadian foe, Steve Claggett, by an 8th round technical knockout.

Claggett sent Jakosalem down in the 3rd round with a hook to the liver.

The Filipino got up but was again floored with a series of body shots.

Jakosalem was able to survive but was way behind on points.

In the 8th round, the Filipino was able to trap Claggett in the neutral corner. He battered the defenseless Canadian until referee Teddy Alivio stepped in to halt the bout at the 1:28 mark.

Meantime, AJ “Bazooka” Banal defeated his Tanzanian foe, Francis Miyeyusho, to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific bantamweight title.

Bazooka scored 3 knockdowns in Round 2 to dispose Miyeyusho.

Filipino Rocky Fuentes secured a unanimous decision of Indonesian Jemmy Gobel, who was deducted several points for excessive holding.

The 3 judges saw it straight 80-70, all in favor of the Filipino super flyweight.

Japanese boxer outpoints Filipino
Japanese super bantamweight Keninchi Yamaguchi edged Filipino Marjohn Yap in a closely fought 8-round bout.

The scores read 75-76, 77-74, 77-74.

Yamaguchi dedicated his fight to the people of Japan who are still recovering from the effects of the earthquake and tsunami.

Among those who attended the fight were retired boxer Z Gorres and WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes.

Gorres paid tribute to his former manager the late Rudy Salud, who was a founding member of the World Boxing Council (WBC).

Pinoy Pride 4 is a joint event presented by Antonio L. Aldeguer (ALA) Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports.

ABS-CBN Channel 2 will air the fight on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. There will also be a replay on Studio 23 at 2:00 p.m.
