Pacquiao is speaker at Elorde rites

MANILA, Philippines – Over 50 world, international and Philippine champions will be accorded boxing’s highest accolade during the 11th Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Memorial Boxing Awards-Banquet of Champions slated Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom of the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel.

Boxing great Manny Pacquiao will lead the honorees as the “Quintessential Athlete” for his unparalleled achievements in and outside the ring, while 2010 world champions Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes and Ana Julaton will be honored as Boxers of the Year in the country’s most prestigious boxing awards held in memory of seven-year junior lightweight champion and Hall of Famer Flash Elorde.


Pacquiao will also serve as guest of honor and speaker and will head the Banquet of Champions which will include 40 world and international champions – five each in the strawweight, light flyweight, flyweight, superflyweight, bantamweight and superbantgamweight, two each in the featherweight, featherweight, superfeatherweight, lightweight and superlightweight, and 15 Philippine champions.

The awards rites, supported by Rep. Mark Sambar of the PBA Partylist, and co-presented by Cobra Energy Drink, Sanicare Kitchen Towels, Procter & Gamble Distributing (Phils), Inc., Contour Splinting Services, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, SMART, International Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Prestige Poker Sport Club,Cablelink, Southpaw Bar and Grill and the Elorde Gyms will also be graced by retired world champions led by Rene Barrientos, Erbito Salavaria and Rolando Navarette.

Julaton, the WBO super bantamweight queen, and WIBA minimumweight champion Gretchen Abaniel are the women honorees.

  The upcoming MMA Festival, organized by Kombat Sports Kalayaan (KSK) and set to take place on April 28 in Poblacion, Makati City, promises to be the largest event of its kind. It will shine a spotlight on MMA fighters like Fil-Am Mark Striegl and Godwin Langbayan. Striegl, a renowned Asian MMA superstar, sambist, model, and actor, will participate in the Grappling Super Fight event against BIJ Brown Belt competitor Paige Alitao.
