MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Edgardo Angara on Tuesday called on the Catholic Church not to use boxing champion Manny Pacquiao to mislead the Filipino public, who he believes are mostly in favor of the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill.
Angara told reporters the surveys have shown that majority of Filipinos want the proposed measure enacted into law.
"People are for it. They live with poverty and misery every day. They want also some help from their church and from their government," he said.
Angara said he is inclined to vote for the bill, but will make sure there are no provisions in it that allow abortion.
He added that the heated and below-the-belt arguments between those for and against the bill must stop.
"The same issue has gone through many Catholic countries more Catholic and more devout than us-Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Italy-without this traumatic and indecent name-calling," Angara said.
