Competing against the PBA's top high flyers, Rey Guevarra almost lost the chance to defend the title in a close fight against his teammate Chris Newsome. Before the final showdown, Franklin Bonifacio of the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and James Forrester of NLEX Road Warriors got eliminated in the first round getting 80 points for Bonifacio and 74 for Forrester.

Newsome scored 96 points in the final round, his first attempt was a rare dunk where he juggled 3 balls and chose one on air for a self alley-hoop dunk which gave him 46 points while his second one was a backboard pass from Scottie Thompson which he finished with a 360 slam that earned him 50points. While Guevarra scored 50 points on his first dunk and needed atleast 47 points on his second dunk to eliminate Newsome which he got by jumping over his two bigmen teammates, Almazan and Jericho Cruz.
