Top prospect Al-Hussaini, Fil-Canadian Anthony sparkle in Rookie Camp

Rabeh Al-Hussaini shared scoring honors with 12 points as the Red Team streaked to its second win with a 76-71 victory over the Red Team Sunday in Day 3 of the PBA Rookie Camp at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The 6-foot-7 center wasn’t exactly dominating. He went 1-of-4 from the field and grabbed three rebounds, but was steady from the free throw line, going 10-for-12 as the Red Team moved within a win of sweeping the mini-tournament featuring 63 aspirants seeking a chance to play in Asia’s first play-for-pay league.

Al-Hussaini, expected to be drafted by Air21 as no.1 in the draft, also got splendid support from Riego Gamalinda (10 points), Giorgio Ciriacruz (nine points) and James Mangahas (nine points).

San Sebastian’s Jimbo Aquino, last year NCAA MVP, also scored 12 points for the Red Team. Claiford Arao, Al-Hussaini’s former teammate at Ateneo, added 11 and four rebounds.

Fil-Canadian Sean Michael Anthony scored eight points, had four steals and three rebounds. But more importantly, the 6-foot-4 guard drew the attention of four-time PBA MVP Alvin Patrimonio.

“He's a great leaper, a solid defender and shoots the ball well," was how Patrimonio, now team manager of B-Meg Dedrby Ace, described Anthony.

In the other game, Mark Canlas scored 16 points as the Blue Team also claimed its second win, 80-65, against the Yellow Team.

Barnett Rogado top scored for Red with 12 points while Elmer Espiritu, Khazim Mirza and Robert Labagala each added nine apiece.

Nonoy Baclao, another prospective first round draftee, didn’t play in the second half and scored only four points.

Coach Johnny Tam of Air 21, who called the shots for the Yellow Team, said Baclao is not in shape, prompting him to sit the 6-foot-5 center in the second half.

The PBA Rookie Camp resumes Monday with undefeated White and Blue Teams clashing at 9 a.m. and Yellow Team (0-2) battling the Red Team (0-2) at 10:30 a.m. also at the Ynares Sports Arena. Admission is free. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
