Sarangani Province Rep. Manny Pacquiao may be annoyed with Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s racial slurs against him, but the 7-division world champion saw something positive in the latest issue involving him and the undefeated American fighter.
“Natutuwa naman akong pati si Floyd Mayweather ay tumutulong sa pagbibigay ng pansin sa aking laban,” Pacquiao wrote in his September 5 column after completing his media tour in the United States for his bout with Mexican Antonio Margarito. The column, entitled “Kumbinasyon,” is published on PhilBoxing.com.
Pacquiao continued to comment on Mayweather’s “free promotion” of the Pacquiao-Margarito fight slated on November 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
“Dahil sa paninira niya sa aking puri at sa paglalahad niya ng kaniyang kamangmangan ay lalong napapansin ng lahat ang laban na ito,” he stated.
But Pacquiao did not take the racism issue lightly, assuring his fans that he will give his reaction soon.
“Dahil kukulangin ang pahina ngayon, bibigyan-pansin ko ang mga kasalanan na ipinataw ni Mayweather sa susunod kong kolum,” he added.
Mayweather has said sorry for his 10-minute profanity-laced and racist tirade against Pacquiao, noting that he was “just having fun.” He added that he does not have “a racist bone in his body.”
A video posted on Ustream showed Mayweather asserting that Pacquiao uses performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), calling him a “yellow chump” and saying that after he defeats him, “I'll make that mother f----- make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice.”
Petition against Mayweather
Aside from Mayweather, some of his team members have also alleged that the Filipino boxing superstar was taking PEDs.
Pacquiao vehemently denied such claim and filed a defamation complaint against Mayweather, his father Floyd Mayweather, Sr., uncle Roger Mayweather, and Golden Boy Promotions executives Oscar dela Hoya and Richard Schaefer.
Meantime, even Pacquiao’s fans have taken Mayweather’s comments seriously.
Since 2009, the fans took note of Mayweather’s defamatory statements against Pacquiao and brought this to the attention of a telecommunications company AT&T which has Mayweather as an endorser.
The petition “Stop Endorsing Floyd Mayweather Jr.” dated December 28, 2009 was addressed to AT&T Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President Randall L. Stephenson as well as other prospective endorsers.
As of posting time, the petition has 5850 signatures.
The fans want AT&T to withdraw its multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Mayweather because they “believe there is no place in the world of sport, nor the world in general for this type of behavior. And we earnestly hope that you will also find there is no place for this type of behavior in your upstanding organization as well.”
Del Gonzales, who registered the 5,632th signature, wrote: “Please give us a favor. Send this guy to Nursery to learn good manners and right conduct. Anyway, attitude came from home and environment. Like father like son!!!!”
Remle Senamopmac said, “I will cancel all my AT&T subscription if they don't punish this racist endorser” while Leo Aranda added, “His ethics are immoral and his image is not worthy of a sportsmanship. My family and friends will be disappointed if we see him on your ads.”
Pacquiao seemed to be aware of the backlash against Mayweather as he wrote, “Alam kong aalma ang maraming taong naapektuhan ng racial slurs ni Mayweather na nagpakita ng kawalanghiyaan niya sa sarili. Alam kong marami pang babatikos sa kanya mula ngayon hanggang sa susunod kong kolum.” – With reports from PhilBoxing.com and Joseph Pimentel, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau
