I tried ignoring the so-so rating and reviews 'The Rite' has been getting but I still went to the movie house sceptical.
I was one of those who expected this movie to offer cheap thrills like those other exorcist movies. I also expected something I hadn't seen a dozen times in the recent cycle of exorcist thrillers.
The Rite takes exorcism more seriously than I expected it to be. The focus is not on scaring you but journeying with the seminary student who is losing his faith. The movie is not shallow but has substance especially if you pay close attention to it. If you go deeper to understand the movie, you will walk out pondering the very deep questions of life.
I recommend the movie if you will watch Anthony Hopkins in anything. I will not recommend if you would like to actually be scared at an exorcism movie.
I left the cinemas feeling quite okay but I could literally feel the details of the movie slipping from my memory.
A few years from now, I'll probably question myself whether or not I ever saw it.
