Love passes Malone with 52nd NBA 'double-double'

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AFP) – Minnesota's Kevin Love notched his 52nd straight game with at least 10 points and 10 rebounds to surpass the modern NBA "double-double" record set by Moses Malone.

Malone recorded the longest such streak since the old American Basketball Association and NBA merged in 1976 with his 51 in 1978 and 1979.

Love, who matched that mark on Monday, shrugged off a bruised left knee to notch 16 points with 21 rebounds in just 27 minutes of playing time as the Timberwolves defeated the Indiana Pacers 101-75.

It was just the Timberwolves' 16th victory of the season.

Love wasn't even sure to play until just before tip-off. He had bruised his left knee in a defeat to Dallas on Monday.

Once on court, he got right to work, and reached double figures in points and rebounds with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Indiana shot a season-low 29 percent, and with the Pacers' shots bouncing off the rim, Love nabbed 10 rebounds in just 12 minutes.

Timberwolves fans were tracking his progress toward the milestone. As soon as Love grabbed his first rebound in the first 10 seconds of the game someone shouted: "That's one! That's one!"

He had 10 rebounds and nine points when he went to the free throw line with 6:51 remaining in the opening half, bringing the crowd to their feet.

He drained his first free throw and acknowledged the crowd with a wave.

Only nine players in NBA history -- both before and after the merger -- have had at least 50 double-doubles in a row.

All eight besides Love -- Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Walt Bellamy, Wilt Chamberlain, Elvin Hayes, Jerry Lucas and Bill Russell -- are in the Hall of Fame.
