Mares wants big fight with Donaire

UNDEFEATED Mexican American bantamweight star Abner Mares welcomes the prospect of fighting world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. should Mares win his title match against Joseph Agbeko on April 23.




“I would like to fight Donaire. Now that Nonito has signed with Golden Boy, I think it will be a lot easier to make that fight,” Mares told Bay Area-based Pinoy boxing scribe Dennis Guillermo of California.

The 25-year-old Mares—who has professional record of 21 win (13 by knockouts) and draw—will fight Agbeko for the finals of a bantamweight tournament organized by Showtime on April 23 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Mares is coming off a split decision victory over knockout artist Vic Darchinyan, while Agbeko outclassed Yonnhy Perez.

Donaire, who holds the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Organization bantamweight titles, has made clear his intention to unify the division as his “immediate priority.”

In fact, boxing observers think the Filipino American boxing star junked Top Rank Promotions in favor of rival Golden Boy Promotions to get the fight against the winner of Mares-Agbeko as well as World Boxing Association titlist Anselmo Moreno (30-1-1, 10 by KOs) of Panama.

Both Donaire and Mares, who now belong to the same promotional company, are known to buck no opponent and readily take on the best available opponents.

My job is fighting . . . I would like to be the best out there by beating the best. I don’t like to duck anyone, and if that (Donaire) fight comes through, I’d be more than happy to take it,” Mares said in the video interview posted in the Examiner.com.

Donaire has a contract for his second HBO-televised fight on May 28, possibly against Moreno, who has reportedly asked at least $500,000 for a title unification showdown with Donaire.

This means that if Mares prevails over Agbeko and Donaire wins a prospective match-up with Moreno, a Donaire-Mares major title unification showdown is likely as early as August.
