SMB was eliminated in the playoff race of the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup when it lost to sister-team B-Meg Derby Ace in overtime, 93-88, Sunday night.
It was the team’s sixth straight defeat as it fell to 1-7.
Only six squads will advance in the next round, the top two will move automatically in the semifinals, while the third to sixth teams will play in a crossover best-of-three series.
The 7th to 10th teams will be eliminated.
For a team that made the Finals in the previous Philippine Cup, it was disappointing being eliminated early in this conference.
Agustin isn’t denying that they have problem with team chemistry after they got the three rookies – Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra – via a trade with Air21 for the veterans Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Pena, Danny Seigle and Paul Artadi.
“Talagang naging problema ang chemistry, kasi nga biglang pasok nung mga rookies,” Agustin said.
“Pero kahit na struggling ang team, nai-intindihan naman ng management. Maski sila alam na it will take time for us to adjust.”
“So ‘yun ang bagay na kailangan naming ma-improve as we prepare for the next conference. Maaga kami magsisimula. We need to improve the chemistry, teamwork and defense. Maibalik din ‘yung winning character ng team,” Agustin added.
San Miguel will still play Rain or Shine on April 6. After that, he will give his players a few days rest.
This is the first time that San Miguel, which owns the league record 10 championships, has missed the playoffs in nearly six years or since Fiesta Cup in 2005-06.
