Philippines Out to Win Medals for Pencak Silat in the SEA Games


Philsilat Sports Association, Inc. (PSAI) President Princess Jacel Kiram-Hasan expressed high hopes for the Philippines' SEA Games bound participants for Pencak Silat Sport, an indigenous martial arts which uses full-body fighting form incorporating strikes, grappling and throwing in addition to weaponry. Its core values embody fair fights, friendship and peace and it is also considered the number one martial arts in Southeast Asia.

In the Philippines, Pencak Silat is one of the fastest growing native sports as it gains popularity in the National Games, State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association, Batang Pinoy, ARMM Regional Games and Mindanaoan Friendship Games. The Philippine Team is a regular participant for international sporting events including: Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines International Games, SEA Games, Asian Games, Asian Beach Games and World Championships.

Last year, October 2016, Philsilat Sports Association, Inc. has bagged three (3) BRONZE medals and three (3) SILVER medals during the 5th ASIAN BEACH GAMES in Da Nang, Vietnam and during the 17th Pencak Silat World Championship and Festival December 2016 held in Bali, Indonesia, the Philippines as a team won the 3rd best contingent in the international Pencak Silat Festival for male & female double category: Beberly Mahusay and April Joy Alarcon - Ganda category (female)- The best unique performance of female double category; Adbul Naseef Ishmael and Alfau Jan Abad - Ganda Category (male)-The best unique performance of male double category for the Seni Category and for the Tanding Category, Princeslyn Enopia won World champion- Bronze Medalist (female category) and Juanilio Ballesta World Champion-Silver Medlist (male category).

There will be fourteen (14) of our national athletes will be competing in the 29th South East Asian (SEA) GAMES KUALA LUMPUR 2017 in Malaysia this 19 to 31 August 2017 and accompanied by four (4) of our passionate Coaches headed by Coach Alexius Martin “Alex” Patano, a former first class international jury and 3-time South East Asian (SEA) games medalist, Coach Diosdado Cantomayor, a Gold medalist during the 9th ASEAN University Games in Brunei Darussalam 1996, Gold medalist for the World Nusantata Pencak Silat Festival in Kuala Terengganu Malaysia and have participated in the 19th SEA games in Chiangmai, Thailand and the World Pecak Silat championship in Thailand.  He is also a part-time faculty member of the Ateneo de manila University and was a former full-time faculty of the University of the Philippines-Manila. Coach Nerlyn Huinda on the other hand is a Silver medalist for the 17th World Pencak Silat Championship 2012 in Thailand, Silver medalist during the 1st Asian Pencak Silat Championship 2011 in Singapore, Silver medalist for the  2007 SEA Games in  Thailand, Silver medalist for the France open 2005, and Gold medalist during the 1st Asia-Pacific 2003 in Manila.

According to Princess Jacel, the President of PHILSILAT Sports Association Inc. (PSAI), with the scientific training implemented by Coach Patano to our elite athletes during their physical conditioning and skills training with combined with kicking and dropping techniques, we stand a very high chances in winning medals for this particular sport.

Philsilat Sports Association Inc. is geared towards youth empowerment and promotion of this indigenous nationwide sport.
