Smart-Gilas finishes 2nd in Dubai Open

MANILA, Philippines – Smart Gilas-Pilipinas bowed to Egypt, 84-75, in the finals of the 22nd Dubai Invitational Open Championship at the Al Ahli Gym.

The Nationals, led by the Mac Baracael, JV Casio, Marcus Douthit and team captain Chris Tiu, put up a gallant stand against the Egyptian squad which also beat them in the elimination round.

The Filipinos made it into the finals by beating Syria, 77-66.

The game results were announced amid an ongoing deadly civil unrest and political uncertainty in Egypt on Saturday. Riots erupted as Egyptians called for the end of President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.

Ironically, its basketball team won against rival team from the Philippines, the country that introduced to the world peaceful street protests as a way to topple a 20-year dictator.
