Hohmann, Chen rule Philippine Open Pool

GERMAN Thorsten Hohmann and Chinese Chen Siming clinched the men’s and women’s crowns of the Philippine Open Pool Championships held at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Hohmann posted a thrilling 11-10 decision over Ralf Souquet in an all-German finale and secured the $30,000 cash prize. He also gained 500 ranking points for winning the title.

Chen, on the other hand, went undefeated in six games. The 2010 China Open champion made an impact in the tournament sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) as she surprised 2008 US Open champion Kelly Fisher of England, 9-3, in their championship showdown.

“I never expected this. This is such a great experience for me, beating these highly rated players,” said Chen through an interpreter.

The 17-year-old Chen earlier defeated reigning world 10-ball champion Jasmin Ouschan of Austria, 9-8; Lin Yuan Chun of Chinese-Taipei, 9-6; Lim Yun Mi of South Korea, 9-2; Line Kjorsvik of Norway,9-7; and Reggie Ann Biagcong of the Philippines, 9-1.

Chen pocketed a whopping $20,000 top purse.

Besides the cash prize, Chen also gained 400 ranking points which will propel her from No. 5 to No. 2 behind top player Kim Ga Young of South Korea in the next week’s standings, according to the association President Ian Anderson.

Filipino Antonio Lining, however, soaked up the tournament’s biggest setback following a 0-9 semifinal loss at the hands of Souquet. Hohmann ousted Liu Haitao of China, 9-8, in the other semifinal match.

“I didn’t get my break,” said Lining, who immediately left the venue after the game.

The other Filipino players were Lee Van Corteza, Dennis Orcollo, Jeffrey de Luna, Ronnie Alcano, Venancio Tanio, Marlon Manalo, Oliver Medenilla, Raymund Faraon, Demosthenes Pulpul, Carlo Biado, Ramil Gallego, Jech Limen, Jerico Banares, Jundel Mazon, Roberto Gomez, Renemar David, Allan Cuartero and Roland de la Cruz.
